Extended São Miguel Experience
Three-day overview of São Miguel's volcanic landscapes and culture
View Itinerary →Volcanic landscapes and lush greenery in one day
A comprehensive one-day road trip covering the island's most iconic natural wonders. The route starts in the west with dramatic coastal cliffs, moves to the central crater lakes, explores the lush green pastures, and concludes in the east with volcanic hot springs and local cuisine.
Pick up rental car and breakfast
Start early to beat the crowds. Pick up a rental car in Ponta Delgada or your accommodation. Grab a quick Portuguese breakfast (pastel de nata and coffee) at a local bakery.
Rugged Coastline: Ponta da Ferraria
Drive to the northern coast to visit Ponta da Ferraria. This is a natural volcanic hot spring pool located directly on the beach, where hot water meets the cold Atlantic Ocean. The black sand and dramatic cliffs offer stunning photo opportunities.
Drive to Sete Cidades
Scenic drive across the island from the north coast to the western crater lakes. The road offers panoramic views of the 'Green Island' landscape.
Sete Cidades Twin Lakes Viewpoints
Visit the famous viewpoints (Vista do Rei and Miradouro da Boca do Inferno) to see the Bottle-Green Lakes. Choose one viewpoint for the best photo ops and a short walk along the rim.
Lunch in Vila Franca do Campo or Lagoa
Stop at a local restaurant in the central region for lunch. Try fresh fish or local Azorean cheese. Alternatively, have a picnic with supplies bought earlier.
Lush Hills and Rolling Pastures
Drive through the central highlands. Stop at various pull-offs to admire the vivid pastures, quaint cottages, and the dramatic volcanic landscape that defines São Miguel. This is the heart of the 'Green Island' aesthetic.
Short Hike in Furnas Forest
Begin a gentle hike through the forested trails near Furnas. The air is rich with sulfur smells, and the path leads through lush vegetation typical of the volcanic terrain.
Poça Dona Beija Natural Pool
Relax in the natural thermal pool at Poça Dona Beija. The water is heated by volcanic activity to a comfortable 39°C. It is a small, intimate pool surrounded by nature, perfect for unwinding after the day's travel.
Dinner: Cozido das Furnas
End the day with the famous local dish, Cozido das Furnas. This stew is cooked underground using the natural heat of the volcanic earth. It is a must-try culinary experience unique to this region.
Return to Accommodation
Drive back to Ponta Delgada or your hotel. The roads are well-lit, but drive carefully as the island is dark and winding in places.
Where to stay: Stay in Ponta Delgada for easy access to the airport and amenities, or stay in Furnas for a more immersive volcanic experience (though you will drive back to Ponta Delgada for the night if not staying in Furnas).
Getting around: A rental car is essential for this itinerary. Public transport is limited and will not allow you to cover this distance in one day efficiently. Parking is generally available at major viewpoints.
