Riverside Walks
Medieval castle on a Tagus River islet
Riverside walks in Almourol offer visitors a peaceful way to experience the Tagus River and the historic Almourol Castle. The castle, a medieval Templar stronghold located on a granite islet, is accessible only by boat, but the surrounding riverbanks provide excellent opportunities for walking and scenic views. Visitors can reach the area by train to Tancos, where boat services depart for the castle, or by driving to Almourol, where parking is available near the river. Note that the Almourol train station is poorly marked, so navigation via GPS is recommended.
The castle itself, rebuilt by the Knights Templar in 1171, serves as a key landmark from the Christian Reconquest. Originally built by the Moors in the early 1100s, it was part of a defensive network against Moorish attacks. While the castle is closed from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, this midday break allows visitors to enjoy the riverside surroundings. Alternative water activities, such as kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, are available for those seeking active engagement with the river.
Admission to the castle ranges from €4 to €6, and tours last less than an hour. Opening hours vary by season, with the site closed on Mondays from October 1st to February 28th. The riverside walks offer a tranquil atmosphere, allowing travelers to appreciate the natural beauty of the Tagus River and the historical significance of the castle. This combination of accessible history, scenic boat travel, and manageable visiting times makes Almourol a compelling destination for those exploring the region near Lisbon.
