12th-century Templar fortress on a Tagus River islet

8.1/10
#1 of 5 in Almourol

The Tagus River (Rio Tejo) serves as the dramatic setting for Almourol Castle, a historic Templar stronghold located on a granite islet in the Santarém District. This medieval fortress, regarded as one of Portugal’s most beautiful castles, offers visitors a unique experience defined by its isolation and riverine location. The site’s history dates back to the early 1100s when Moors built an initial lookout point. In 1129, during the Reconquista, the Knights Templar conquered the structure and rebuilt it in 1171 as part of a defensive network against Moorish attacks. The date 1171 remains visible above the entrance, marking its founding.

Access to the castle is exclusively by boat, with tours lasting less than an hour. Visitors can also engage in water activities such as kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding around the islet, offering different perspectives of the river and the fortress. Admission fees range from €4 to €6. The site is managed by the Almourol Templar Interpretation Center (CITA), which provides additional historical context.

Planning a visit requires attention to seasonal schedules. From March to October, the castle is open from 9:30 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 18:30. During February and November to January, hours are reduced to 10:00–13:00 and 14:30–17:30. The site is closed on Mondays from October 1 to February 28. Located approximately an hour’s drive from Lisbon, the Tagus River setting enhances the castle’s appeal, providing panoramic views and a serene atmosphere. This combination of accessible history, scenic boat travel, and manageable visiting times makes the Tagus River and Almourol Castle a compelling destination for travelers exploring the region.
