Tagus River (Rio Tejo)

The Tagus is the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula, rising in Spain and crossing Portugal on its way to the Atlantic at Lisbon, and in the Ribatejo it is at its most appealing, wide and slow between fertile banks. At Almourol it holds one of the most photogenic castles in Portugal, a fortress built on a small granite island in mid-stream. Seen from the shore, with the water on all sides, it looks like something from a storybook.

The castle has a military history that matches its looks. The site was a lookout in the period of Muslim rule, and after the Christian conquest in the 12th century it was entrusted to the Knights Templar. Their master, Gualdim Pais, rebuilt it in 1171, and an inscription records the date. The castle became part of a line of Templar strongholds along the river, which also included Tomar and Cardiga, and later it passed to the Order of Christ. The walls are tall, with a central keep and a ring of towers, and the stonework gives a sense of how strongly the order built.

Access is by boat. A short crossing from the riverbank takes visitors to the island, where steps and paths lead up to the walls and the keep. From the top, the views take in the river, the plain, and the distant hills, and the site is especially atmospheric when mist lies on the water. A small interpretation centre near the departure point explains the story of the Templars. The surrounding riverside area has walking paths, picnic areas, and spots for watching birds. Some operators offer kayaking and paddleboarding, which gives a view of the castle from water level.

The castle has long inspired legends and romances, and it appears in tales of knights and enchantments, which is part of its appeal. Planning is important: boat crossings and opening hours change with the season, the site may close on certain days, and prices can alter, so check current details before travelling. It is about an hour from Lisbon by road, so it works as a day trip combined with Tomar and its convent.
