Chalet Da Condessa D'Edla
Alpine-style chalet built by King Ferdinand II
The Chalet of the Countess of Edla is a whimsical, alpine-style retreat located in the western reaches of Pena Park in Sintra, Portugal. Built by King Ferdinand II and his wife, Elise Friederike Hensler (later the Countess of Edla), this romantic hideaway serves as an intimate contrast to the grandeur of the nearby Pena Palace. The chalet functions as a haven for the arts and leisure, featuring a garden with charming nooks and interiors that include dining rooms, bedrooms, and period details.
Visitors typically spend 30 to 45 minutes exploring the chalet and its immediate surroundings. The site is described as a hidden gem, requiring some navigation through the park’s forests to reach. Access is included with the admission ticket for Pena Park (€12) or the combined ticket for Pena Palace and Park (€20). A 10% discount is available for holders of the Lisboa Card.
Opening hours for the chalet are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with last admission at 5:00 p.m. The park itself remains open until 7:00 p.m. (last admission at 6:00 p.m.). Travelers should note that the main entrance gate to the chalet closes from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., but access is still possible via other park entrances during this window. The location is accessible via the Sintra Line train from Lisbon, making it a convenient stop for those exploring the region’s royal heritage. The combination of architectural uniqueness and historical significance offers a quiet, reflective experience amidst Sintra’s more crowded attractions.
