Bridge (Ponte)

The old bridge across the Lima is the reason for the town's name, and it remains the place where Ponte de Lima begins and ends. It is long and low, built of granite and carried on a line of arches, and it links the old centre on the north bank with the quieter side across the river. Part of the structure dates from Roman times, when it carried a road between Braga and Astorga that was one of the main routes of the north-west of the peninsula. The rest is medieval, rebuilt in the 14th century after the original was damaged, so the bridge is a patchwork of eras, with different stone, arch shapes, and repairs visible if you look closely.

Crossing it on foot is the best way to understand it. The surface is uneven, with paving worn smooth by centuries of use, and the parapets have small niches where people could step aside for carts. At the far end a small church stands near the bridgehead, and from the middle you can see the arcades and manor houses of the old town reflected in the river. Plane trees line the bank, and in summer the river is low and wide, with gravel banks and rowers on the water. The scene changes with the seasons, and in winter the Lima can rise high against the piers.

The bridge also has a place in religious travel. The Portuguese route of the Camino de Santiago passes through Ponte de Lima and crosses the river here, so walkers with shells on their packs are a common sight, especially in spring and autumn. For them the crossing is one of the milestones of the stage through the Minho. The bridge is also linked to the legend of Decimus Brutus, whose statue stands nearby, and the two sights are best seen together.

There is no charge to walk across, and the bridge is open at all times. Early morning gives soft light and few people, while evening brings long shadows and the glow of street lamps on the water. It suits photographers, walkers, and anyone who likes to start a visit with the town's central landmark, followed by a stroll along the riverside gardens and a coffee in the old square.
