São Miguel

Volcanic island with crater lakes, hot springs, and lush scenery

9.2/10
Azores Region

São Miguel, often called the 'Green Island,' is the crown jewel of the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal set in the North Atlantic. Covering about 760 square kilometers and home to roughly 140,000 residents, São Miguel is celebrated for its lush volcanic landscapes, crater lakes and geothermal wonders. The island’s history dates back to the 15th century, when Portuguese settlers first arrived, transforming the once-forested land into a patchwork of pastures, tea plantations and vibrant towns. Ponta Delgada, the island’s capital and largest city, is a charming blend of historic architecture, lively markets and modern amenities, serving as the gateway for most visitors. Its black and white basalt-and-limestone buildings, grand city gates and waterfront promenade give it a distinctive look.

São Miguel’s natural attractions are legendary. The twin lakes of Sete Cidades, set in a massive volcanic caldera, are among the most photographed sights in the Azores. Visitors can hike along the crater rim for panoramic views of the blue and green lakes, or descend to the village below for a closer look. The Furnas Valley, another volcanic hotspot, is famous for its bubbling hot springs, fumaroles and the Terra Nostra Park, where guests can soak in a large thermal pool surrounded by exotic gardens. The traditional cozido das Furnas, a stew slow-cooked in geothermal steam, is a must-try local specialty, and the nearby Poça da Dona Beija offers another thermal bath.

Other highlights include Lagoa do Fogo, a pristine crater lake high in the island’s central mountains, and the tea plantations of Gorreana and Porto Formoso—the only tea fields in Europe. The island’s coastline is dotted with black sand beaches, natural swimming pools and dramatic cliffs, offering opportunities for surfing, swimming and whale watching. The islet of Vila Franca do Campo, a volcanic crater just offshore, is a popular spot for snorkeling and boat tours, and it is open to visitors only in summer, with a limited number of daily boat trips.

São Miguel is a haven for outdoor activities. Hiking trails crisscross the island, leading through laurel forests, past waterfalls and up to scenic viewpoints. Canyoning, mountain biking and horseback riding are also popular, while the surrounding Atlantic waters are ideal for kayaking, diving and deep-sea fishing. Wildlife enthusiasts can join boat tours to spot whales, dolphins and seabirds, especially during the spring and summer migration seasons. Many of the trails are marked and begin at forest parks, with picnic areas and viewpoints along the way.

Cultural experiences abound in São Miguel’s towns and villages. Ponta Delgada’s historic center features cobbled streets, baroque churches and the bustling Mercado da Graça. The island’s festivals, such as the Festas do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, showcase Azorean traditions, music and cuisine, with a large religious procession in spring. Local restaurants serve fresh seafood, cheeses and the island’s unique pineapple, grown in greenhouses.

Getting to São Miguel is easy, with direct flights from mainland Portugal and several European cities to João Paulo II Airport near Ponta Delgada. The island is best explored by car, allowing visitors to reach remote viewpoints, trailheads and quiet corners at their own pace. Public buses connect major towns, but service is limited in rural areas.

The best time to visit São Miguel is from May to October, when the weather is mild, the landscapes are lush and outdoor activities are at their best. Spring and early autumn offer fewer crowds and excellent conditions for hiking and sightseeing, while summer is ideal for swimming and festivals. São Miguel’s unpredictable weather means visitors should be prepared for occasional rain, but the island’s beauty shines in any season. For adventure, relaxation or a taste of Azorean culture, São Miguel Island promises an unforgettable journey.
