Terroir is a French word that has become part of the language of wine everywhere, meaning the sum of soil, climate, slope, and tradition that gives a wine its character, and the Douro valley is one of the best places in the world to taste it. The valley is cut deep into hard schist rock, and the vines grow on steep terraces that take in the heat of the day and hold it through the night. Summers are hot and dry, winters cold, and the poor, stony soil forces the roots to dig deep for water. The result is small yields and grapes of great concentration.

A tasting focused on terroir, such as the experience offered in Vale de Mendiz in the municipality of Alijó, concentrates on these differences. Vale de Mendiz is a small village in the hills above the Pinhão river, in the centre of the Douro wine region, and the final approach is by a narrow country road, which is why a smaller car is recommended. The surrounding vineyards include very old plots, known in Portuguese as vinhas velhas, planted decades or even a century ago with dozens of different grape varieties mixed together in the same field. These old vines produce small quantities of intense fruit, and the mixed planting adds layers of flavour that single-variety vineyards do not have.

The experience typically starts with a walk among the vines, where a guide explains the soil, the terraces, and the challenges of working on steep slopes, most of which still have to be done by hand. A tasting follows, with several wines presented one after another, often including both table wines, red and white, and a fortified wine. The aim is to taste the wines made with minimal intervention, in which grapes are crushed in stone tanks or fermented with native yeasts and little added, to show the differences between plots and years. The guide explains how the acidity, structure, and mineral character relate to the schist soil and to the age of the vines.

Booking in advance is essential, since groups are small, and transportation is not included, so plan how to arrive. If you are driving, arrange a designated driver or spit rather than swallow, since the mountain roads are winding. Wear comfortable shoes if the visit includes a vineyard walk, and bring a hat in summer.

The tasting suits wine enthusiasts, couples, and curious beginners who want to understand how place shapes taste. A visit takes around an hour and a half.
