Birthplace of Portugal with medieval landmarks

Guimarães is the town that Portuguese tradition names as the place where the country began, and its compact historic centre, inscribed by UNESCO in 2001, is built around that claim. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, is linked with the town through birth and baptism traditions, and the nearby Battle of São Mamede in 1128 is seen as the moment when he took control of the county. A phrase painted in the old town, Aqui nasceu Portugal, sums up the local view.

The oldest layer is the castle on its rocky hill, which grew from a defensive tower and monastery of the 10th century and was rebuilt in medieval times. Beside it stands the small Romanesque Church of São Miguel do Castelo, where tradition says the first king was baptised. Below the hill, the Paço dos Duques de Bragança, a 15th-century ducal palace, has tall brick chimneys and a style closer to northern European manors than to anything else in Portugal. Together the three buildings give a clear picture of how power moved from fortress to court.

The real pleasure of the centre, though, is the web of streets between them. Rua de Santa Maria runs downhill from the castle, lined with granite houses with wooden balconies, and it opens onto the Largo da Oliveira, where the Gothic Nossa Senhora da Oliveira church and its cloister face a small Gothic canopy known as the Padrão do Salado. Nearby, the Praça de Santiago has arcaded houses and café terraces, and in the evening it fills with residents rather than just visitors. The streets are cobbled and often steep, so shoes with grip are useful.

Guimarães has been restored with care, and its status as European Capital of Culture in 2012 left a lasting mark on museums and public spaces. It is a university town, which keeps the old centre lively, with students, small shops, and restaurants serving traditional northern dishes such as bacalhau and roast kid.

The centre suits history readers, architecture lovers, and anyone who prefers walking to ticking off monuments. A full visit takes a day if you enter the castle, church, and palace, and half a day if you simply wander. It also works well as a base for exploring the Minho region.
