Pescadores Beach

Iconic beach near Albufeira's historic old town

Praia dos Pescadores, Fishermen's Beach, is the beach of the old town of Albufeira and the place that most clearly shows how the town grew from a fishing village into the best-known resort of the Algarve. Until the mid-20th century small wooden boats were pulled up on this sand each day, nets were mended on the shore, and the catch was sold nearby. Today a few traditional boats remain at one end of the beach, but the shore is mostly a holiday space.

The setting is distinctive. A small bay lies at the foot of a low cliff, with the old whitewashed town climbing above it in tiers, and the beach is reached from the town centre through a tunnel and down steps, which makes the arrival dramatic. Rock outcrops with weathered ochre cliffs frame the sand, and the water is generally calm and clear. The beach is one of the most crowded in the Algarve in high season, so those who want space should come early in the morning or in the shoulder months of May, June, and September.

The old town above is worth exploring. Albufeira takes its name from the Arabic al-Buhera, meaning the castle of the sea, and the Moorish period left its mark on the twisting lanes and the white houses with their small balconies and cupolas. The main square, the church, and a clock tower give structure to the old centre, and the narrow streets are filled with restaurants, shops, and bars, particularly active at night. Fresh grilled sardines and other fish are typical dishes, and the beach has cafés and restaurants with terraces.

Boat trips leave from the nearby marina and from the beach in season, offering coastal cruises and dolphin watching, and the cliffs and caves along the coast can be seen from the water. Lifeguards are present during the main season, but the sea can change with tides and weather, so follow the flags.

The beach suits families who want a lively atmosphere, couples exploring the old town, and travellers who like to be near restaurants and nightlife. It is not a place for solitude. Those looking for a quieter beach will find calmer stretches to the east and west, a short drive away.
