Praia do Camilo is a spectacular, secluded cove located on the southern coast of Lagos in the Algarve, Portugal. Nestled between the dramatic limestone cliffs of Ponta da Piedade and Praia de Dona Ana, this small beach is renowned for its fine golden sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. The surrounding ochre cliffs create a sheltered, calm environment that is ideal for swimming and offers a tranquil atmosphere distinct from the busier beaches nearby.
Accessing this hidden gem requires a descent down a steep wooden staircase of roughly 200 steps. While the walk down is straightforward, climbing back up demands moderate physical fitness, so visitors should bring water and wear comfortable footwear. The path itself offers several photo opportunities, allowing guests to capture the stunning coastal scenery before reaching the sand.
Once on the beach, visitors can explore unique natural features, including a tunnel cut through the rock that connects Camilo to an adjacent, more secluded cove. At low tide, these tunnels and nearby sea arches become accessible for exploration. The water clarity is exceptional, making it a popular spot for snorkeling, as swimmers can clearly see the sandy bottom and local fish species.
There are no bars or shops on the sand itself, only a restaurant at the top of the cliff, so bring water and anything else you need down the stairs. The beach is tiny and gets very crowded in high summer, so arrive early. For those seeking a memorable experience, the sunset views from the clifftop above the staircase are particularly spectacular, offering a perfect end to a day spent enjoying one of the Algarve’s most iconic natural landscapes.
