Praia Dona Ana is a stunning coastal destination in Lagos, Portugal, renowned for its dramatic geological features and crystal-clear waters. This small cove of golden sand is framed by towering ochre limestone cliffs and distinctive sea stacks that rise sharply from the Atlantic Ocean. The beach’s unique topography creates a natural windbreak, resulting in calm waters that are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors often describe the views as untouched and breathtaking, making it one of the Algarve’s most photographed locations.
The beach lies about a kilometre and a half south of Lagos old town. You can walk there in around twenty minutes along the streets and clifftop paths, or drive or take a taxi to the small car park on the cliff, from where a long stairway leads down to the sand. The beach is open twenty-four hours a day, allowing for flexible visitation, whether for a midday swim or a serene sunset watch. There is a restaurant at the top of the cliff and seasonal sunbed and umbrella rental on the beach, but the cove is small and fills up quickly in summer, so arrive early and bring water.
Culturally, the beach sits within the historic context of Lagos, a city that played a pivotal role in the Age of Discovery. The nearby Ponta da Piedade rock formations complement the beach’s scenery, offering additional opportunities for photography and exploration. Whether you are seeking relaxation under the sun or an active afternoon of water sports, Praia Dona Ana provides a picturesque setting that captures the essence of the Portuguese coast. Its combination of natural grandeur and accessible amenities makes it a staple for any itinerary in the Algarve.
