The Torre do Relógio is the clock tower of Caminha, and it is the most recognisable landmark in this small walled town on the Minho river. It stands beside the main square and is a surviving part of the medieval defences that once enclosed the town. Caminha was fortified in the 14th century, when the frontier with Castile was a constant source of tension, and the tower was one of the elements of that system, a solid granite structure from which sentries could watch the approaches by land and by the river. Over the centuries, as the military need faded, the walls were largely dismantled or absorbed into houses, and the tower was adapted for a peaceful purpose, with a clock that gives it its name and now tells the time to the square.

The tower is built of granite blocks, square in plan, with walls pierced by narrow openings and crowned by a simple top that carries the clock face. It is plain, without ornament, which gives it a certain dignity, and the contrast with the colourful houses and café terraces around it makes it stand out. The clock mechanism marks the hours with a bell, and the sound is a regular part of life in the square. Some parts of the structure belong to later periods, since the building has been repaired and altered several times.

It is usually viewed from the outside, and there is no fee to look at it. The square below is the best place to appreciate it, particularly in the early evening, when the stone catches the light. From the nearby riverfront promenade, the tower appears above the roofs, and the view across the Minho toward the hills of Galicia gives a sense of why this location was so important for defence. A small ferry crosses to the Spanish village of A Guarda, and in clear weather the opposite bank seems very close.

Caminha's old town rewards a slow walk. The parish church, with its carved ceiling, the Renaissance fountain, the town hall, and the lanes behind the square are all within a few minutes. The coast is nearby, with beaches and pine woods, and the Ínsua islet and fort lie off the river mouth.

The tower suits history readers, photographers, and visitors who like small towns. A stop takes only a few minutes, and combines naturally with a coffee in the square.
