Medieval ruins in Serra da Gardunha

The ruins of the castle crown the highest point of Castelo Novo, a Historic Village on the foothills of the Serra da Gardunha in the Castelo Branco district, and the short climb to them is the best way to understand the shape of the settlement below. The village's name means New Castle, and the stronghold that gave it its name was part of the chain of fortifications that defended the Beira Baixa and the frontier during the Middle Ages. Positioned on a rocky height, with views in every direction, it controlled the surrounding country and the roads that crossed it.

Much of the castle is now gone. Its walls and towers were damaged by time, by wars, and by the reuse of its stone for other buildings, which is a common fate for castles that lost their military role. What survives are stretches of wall, the footing of towers, and a platform at the top, together with a bell tower in the village that is said to have been built using stone from the fortress. This reuse is a visible reminder of how medieval buildings were quarried by later generations, and it ties the ruins to the village in a literal sense. The fragments of masonry among the rocks and wild flowers give the site a quiet, romantic character.

The path to the ruins climbs from the village through cobbled lanes between granite houses with wooden balconies, a walk that is pleasant in itself. At the top, the reward is a wide view over the tiled roofs, the fields and chestnut woods, the plain of the Cova da Beira, and the long slopes of the Gardunha to one side. On clear days, the high ridge of the Serra da Estrela is visible in the distance. The light in the late afternoon is particularly good for photography, and the sunset can be spectacular.

The village has two other sights nearby, the old town hall with its arcaded upper floor and a Baroque fountain from the 18th century, which can be combined in a short circuit. Local guided tours with a medieval theme are sometimes offered, so ask at the information point. The area is known for its cherries, which blossom in spring, and for the quiet beauty of its countryside.

Wear sturdy shoes for the uneven path and bring water. The ruins suit history readers, walkers, and photographers, and they take about an hour with the village.
