Cerro Da Villa Archaeological Site
Roman villa ruins with ancient mosaics
Cerro da Vila is the main archaeological site of Vilamoura and a surprising contrast to the resort around it. Within walking distance of the marina, on low ground beside a golf course, lie the remains of a large Roman coastal villa, a complex that was occupied for several centuries, from the 1st to the 5th century AD, and that tells a story of the Roman economy in the province of Lusitania.
The villa was more than a country house. The Algarve coast was an important area for fishing and for the production of fish-based products, such as salted fish and the sauce known as garum, which was traded across the empire. A site like this combined a landlord's residence with workshops and storage, and the remains include baths, rooms with mosaic floors, and areas used for production and trade. The location near the shore made it easy to ship goods by sea. Excavations have also found traces of activity earlier than the Roman period, so the hill appears to have been used by people for a long time before the villa was built.
The mosaics are the highlight. Geometric patterns and designs inspired by the sea, made of small coloured stones, decorate floors that were once part of the most important rooms, and walking along the raised walkways gives a close view. A small museum on the site displays objects found in the digs, including pottery, glass, coins, sculpture, and items from burials, which help to bring daily life and trade networks into focus. Information panels and models explain how the villa looked and how it functioned.
A visit is relaxed and takes an hour or so. The site is open and exposed, with limited shade, so bring a hat and water in summer, and spring or autumn is more comfortable. Entrance arrangements and charges can change, so check before going. Because the site is close to the marina, it is easy to combine with a walk along the waterfront.
It suits history readers, families with children who like mosaics and ruins, and anyone who wants to see the area's long past behind the modern resort. Vilamoura's marina is nearby for a meal or a drink afterwards.
