Vilamoura Marina
Marina in Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal
Vilamoura is a purpose-built resort on the central Algarve coast, and its marina is the centre of it. The development was planned in the 1960s by the businessman Cupertino de Miranda, who bought a large estate of pine woods and farmland west of Quarteira and imagined a luxury resort with golf courses, hotels, and a harbour. The marina was opened in the 1970s and became one of the largest in Europe, with berths for around a thousand boats, and it remains the focal point of the resort, with a modern waterfront lined with restaurants, bars, and shops.
The harbour is a pleasant place to walk. A wide paved promenade runs around the basin, with the masts of sailing boats and the sleek hulls of motor yachts in rows on one side and a line of waterfront cafés and restaurants on the other. In the evening, the terraces fill with people having dinner, and the lights reflect in the water. The marina offers everything that boat owners need, with fuel, repairs, and supplies, and it is a stopping point for yachts crossing between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Visitors who do not sail can still enjoy the atmosphere, watching the comings and goings and looking at the boats.
From the marina, boat trips leave for dolphin watching, fishing, and coastal cruises, offering views of the cliffs and caves along the Algarve coast, and there are options for sailing and sunset cruises. The marina beach, Praia da Marina, lies next to the harbour entrance and is a gentle, sheltered strip of sand. The resort has several golf courses nearby, which is the main reason many visitors come, along with a casino and a range of nightlife venues.
Vilamoura also has a deeper history that is easy to overlook. A short walk from the marina, in a small archaeological park, lie the ruins of a Roman villa and a settlement known as Cerro da Vila, with mosaics, baths, and a small museum, which show that this stretch of coast was important long before the resort was built. A visit gives a very different perspective on the place, and entrance to the site is inexpensive, while the marina itself is free to explore.
The marina is easy to reach, and it is within walking distance of the hotels and the beach, so parking is not needed. It is busiest in summer and quiet in winter, when some restaurants close. Check current times for the museum and the boat trips.
The area suits families, couples, golfers, and anyone who enjoys a lively waterfront with a view of the boats.
