Porto Santo is a small, sandy island north-east of Madeira, and it has a modest but real link with Christopher Columbus. In the late 15th century the future explorer lived for a time in Madeira and Porto Santo, and he married Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, whose father, Bartolomeu Perestrelo, was the first captain-donatary of the island. The Casa de Colombo in Vila Baleira, the island's main town, is the museum that tells this story, and it is housed in a building traditionally linked to the family.

The house itself, in the old part of town, has features from the 16th century, among them Gothic-style windows, and it is easy to miss on the street. Even so, it is the right place to learn about the island's role in the age of discovery. Porto Santo was one of the first places settled by the Portuguese in the Atlantic, in 1418 and the years that followed, and it served as a stepping stone for ships heading to Madeira and later for those sailing west and south. The museum places the island in this wider story, with exhibits on Portuguese and Spanish maritime expansion.

Inside, the collection includes ship models, navigational instruments, maps, and reproductions of documents. A small number of rooms present how navigation worked in the 15th century, with the quadrant, the compass, and charts, and they explain why the Atlantic islands mattered as stopping points. Some displays deal with Columbus's own life and voyages, drawing on the tradition that he visited and lived on the island. Historians debate the precise details of that connection, and the museum is best seen as a window onto the maritime world he knew, rather than a definitive biography.

A visit is quick, around half an hour, and fits naturally into a day in Vila Baleira. The town has a small square, a church, and a lively promenade, and from here the island's long golden beach is a short walk away. The museum's opening hours and prices are fixed locally and may vary in different seasons, so check ahead.

It suits history readers, families with older children, and anyone looking for something to do on a cloudy beach day. Combined with the basalt columns and the beaches at Calheta, it makes a varied day on the island.
