Praia Da Calheta

Sandy beach in southern Porto Santo

Praia da Calheta lies at the western end of Porto Santo, the small island northeast of Madeira known for having the longest sandy beach in the whole archipelago. While the main beach in front of Vila Baleira runs for about nine kilometres along the south coast, Calheta sits at its far end, where the sand narrows and rocky headlands begin to appear. It is quieter than the central stretch and a good choice for those who want a calmer day.

The sand on Porto Santo is pale gold and fine, and it comes largely from crushed shells and marine organisms, in contrast to the dark volcanic beaches of Madeira. Islanders have long believed that the warm sand has therapeutic value for rheumatism and joint pains, and some visitors bury themselves in it as a form of treatment. The sea is clear, shallow and relatively calm, and in summer it is warm enough for long swims. Because the island is dry and sunny for much of the year, the season for the beach extends from late spring into early autumn.

Calheta is a sheltered spot, backed by low cliffs and by the dry, scrubby hills of the island's western end. Near the beach, the headland of Ponta da Calheta offers a viewpoint and rocky shoreline for walks, and there are tide pools and small coves at the foot of the cliffs. A trail leads further along the coast, with views across to the islets and out to the open Atlantic. At some times of the year, there are beach bars, loungers and umbrellas for rent, though it is not as developed as the central beach, so bring water, sun protection and shade. Services vary by season, and in quiet months little may be open.

The beach is a good starting point for exploring the western end of the island. Nearby, you can see the volcanic rocks, rock formations and viewpoints, and the island's main sights are not far away. Vila Baleira, the main town, has restaurants, shops and the museum dedicated to Christopher Columbus, and the Zimbralinho beach is another quiet spot along the coast. The basalt organ, a cliff of columnar basalt on the coast, is also worth a visit.

Getting here is straightforward. Porto Santo can be reached by a flight from Funchal, which takes about fifteen minutes, or by ferry, which takes a few hours. Once on the island, taxis and rental cars make it easy to reach Calheta, and the roads are quiet. The beach suits families, couples and anyone who likes quiet shores, and it is best in the morning or evening when the sun is softer. Always check the sea conditions before swimming, as currents can occur on the outer parts of the coast.
