Annual horse fair in Golegã, Portugal

Every November the small Ribatejo town of Golegã becomes the horse capital of Portugal. The Feira Nacional do Cavalo, the National Horse Fair, is built around the feast of São Martinho on 11 November, and it is the country's best-known gathering for the Lusitano, the Iberian breed prized for its balance, courage, and willingness to work with a rider. The fair is old, with roots in the 16th century, when a market held around the same date brought breeders and traders together on the plain beside the Tagus.

What makes Golegã special is that the horse is part of the street life rather than confined to an arena. Riders in traditional dress, many in short jackets and sashes, move through the town centre on elegant mounts, and carriages and pairs wait at the kerb. The main square, with its arcades and cafés, becomes a stage where riders greet friends from horseback. Evenings bring tertúlias, informal gatherings of horse people who talk, sing, and drink late into the night, and in the stalls and tents you will hear many conversations about bloodlines and training.

The formal programme is full. There are riding demonstrations, equestrian competitions in the arena, shows of working equitation, and presentations of Lusitano stallions and mares to buyers and judges. The Portuguese riding school tradition, with its refined, collected movements, is on display, and you can compare how different breeders train their animals. The fair lasts for around ten days and is traditionally at its busiest on the weekends and on the weekend closest to São Martinho.

Food and drink are part of the fun. Roasted chestnuts are everywhere in the season, along with regional sausages, grilled meats, and new wine. Streets are crowded, and accommodation in the town fills early, so many visitors stay in nearby Tomar, Santarém, or Torres Novas and travel in. Plan for mud or rain, because November weather in the Tagus valley can be wet, and comfortable shoes are essential.

The fair suits horse lovers, photographers, families with children who enjoy animals, and anyone curious about Portuguese rural tradition. It is also a lively social occasion, with locals and visitors mixing in the streets and the horses at the centre of everything.
