Fóia Peak

Highest point in Algarve at 902 meters

9.0/10
#1 of 2 in Monchique

Fóia is the highest point of the Serra de Monchique, and at 902 metres it is also the highest summit in the Algarve. From the coast it looks like a rounded, wooded hill, but its position, a short distance inland and close to the sea, gives it a very wide outlook. On a clear day the view from the top takes in the whole western Algarve, from the bay of Portimão and the long beaches of Alvor to the south coast, the Atlantic horizon, and, in the west, the headlands toward Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente.

The summit can be reached by a paved road that climbs through the mountains from the town of Monchique, passing eucalyptus, cork oak, and chestnut woods. At the top, a car park and a cluster of radio and television masts mark the highest ground, and a small area has cafés and shops selling local crafts, honey, and the strong fruit spirit made from the fruit of the strawberry tree, called medronho. The masts are not beautiful, but they do not spoil the view, which is the point of coming. A short walk leads to viewpoints on the edge of the plateau.

The weather often differs from the coast. When the beaches are hot and sunny, the summit can be cooler, windy, and sometimes wrapped in cloud, and the temperature may be ten degrees lower than at sea level, so bring a jacket. Early morning and late afternoon give the clearest light for photography, and haze in midsummer can reduce visibility, so spring and autumn are often best. The landscape of the serra has been affected by wildfires in recent years, and regrowth is visible on some of the slopes.

Monchique, a short drive below, is a pleasant small town with a spa at Caldas de Monchique, smoked ham and sausages, and craft shops. The mountain makes a good contrast to a beach holiday, with walking routes and cooler air, and the road to the top is popular with cyclists.

The peak suits drivers, cyclists, photographers, and families wanting a half-day away from the coast. Allow an hour at the top, and a further hour or two if you combine it with the town and the spa. There is no entry fee for the viewpoint itself.
