The Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo stands prominently on the Sítio promontory, offering a striking view of the Atlantic Ocean. Originally constructed in 1577 by King Sebastian I, this historic structure was designed to defend local maritime activities from pirates. Significant expansions between 1595 and 1644, including a sculpted image of the archangel above the entrance, shaped its current irregular form. The site holds historical significance, having witnessed the French invasion of 1807 and the Portuguese Civil War.

Today, the fort operates as a museum, open to the public for exploration. Visitors can access the site by taking the funicular to the upper town and walking a short distance past the Sanctuary of Our Lady. The elevated position provides panoramic views of the coastline, including Praia do Norte, known for its massive waves. Inside, the museum features exhibits on the region’s surfing heritage, including scientific explanations of record-breaking waves, videos, photos, and surfboards used by top global competitors.

Opening hours and the small admission fee vary by season, so check before visiting. The fort remains a key destination for those interested in the maritime history and cultural heritage of Nazaré. The combination of historical depth and scenic ocean views makes it a notable stop for visitors exploring the region. The site also functions as a lighthouse, guiding fishermen and adding to its enduring role in the community.
