Perched atop the cliffs of Sítio, the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré stands as a monumental testament to centuries of faith and royal patronage. Visitors typically reach this historic site by taking the funicular from the town center, a convenient ascent that rewards travelers with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and the sanctuary’s imposing Baroque facade. The complex, which evolved from a 14th-century hermitage, features twin bell towers and a Latin cross layout finalized in the late 17th century.

Inside, the atmosphere is defined by intricate Dutch tile panels from the 1700s, created by master W. Van Kloet, which depict scenes from the Old Testament. These azulejos contrast beautifully with the gilded woodwork of the main altar. The sanctuary houses the small, much-venerated wooden image of Our Lady of Nazaré, which tradition says was brought to Portugal from Nazareth centuries ago, an artifact that anchors the site’s spiritual significance. The sacristy offers further cultural insight, displaying sacred art and paintings that illustrate the local legends associated with Our Lady of Nazaré.

Entry to the church is free, while a small fee is usually charged to visit the sacristy and the passage behind the altar where the image can be seen up close. The building has been enlarged and rebuilt several times over the centuries with royal support, and its great pilgrimage festival is held each September. As a focal point for pilgrims and tourists alike, the Santuário provides a quiet refuge where visitors can appreciate the blend of religious heritage and coastal beauty that defines Nazaré.
