Monte Brasil is the green headland that shelters the harbour of Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira, and it is both a natural landmark and the site of one of the largest fortifications in the Atlantic. It is a volcanic peninsula, the remains of an old crater whose seaward side has been eroded away, so that what remains is a high, curved ridge around a hollow, reaching about two hundred metres. The slopes are covered in woods, mainly planted trees such as cedars and eucalyptus, with open grassland on the higher ground, and a network of roads and paths crosses the whole area.

The fortress is the main man-made feature. The Fortaleza de São João Baptista was begun in the 1590s when Portugal was ruled by the Spanish crown, and it was designed to protect the port, which was a vital stop for fleets returning from the Americas and Asia with treasure. Its great walls, bastions, and gates, with the Spanish royal arms over the entrance, follow the shape of the hillside, and it was in use for centuries. It is still partly used by the military, so access to some areas is restricted, and visitors may need to join a guided tour or follow signs. Within the walls are chapels, courtyards, and barracks.

The wider mountain offers walks and viewpoints. Paths lead to the crater rim, from where the view takes in the whole town of Angra, with its red roofs and church towers, the sweep of the bay, and the coast stretching away. On a clear day the island of São Jorge is visible across the water. A picnic area, a small deer park with fallow deer, and quiet roads make the hill popular with local families, especially at weekends. The woodland is cool in summer, and the sea breeze keeps the air fresh.

Getting there is easy, since the peninsula lies next to the marina and the old town. You can walk up in about half an hour, or drive. Wear shoes with good grip, since paths can be muddy, and bring a jacket, because the wind at the top is strong. Tour times and prices vary, so check current arrangements.

It suits walkers, history readers, families, and photographers. Combined with a walk through Angra's historic centre, it makes a full day.
