Monte Palace Madeira

Monte Palace Madeira, officially known as the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, is a prominent cultural and botanical destination located in the village of Monte, high above Funchal. Spanning 70,000 square meters, the site offers visitors a serene escape with stunning vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and the city below. The grounds feature diverse landscapes, including African sculptures, Portuguese azulejo tiles, oriental gardens, and ponds filled with koi carp and peacocks. While the palace interior remains private, the adjacent museum houses an impressive collection of minerals and gemstones.

The site holds significant historical value, originally established as Quinta do Prazer under British Consul General Charles Murray. It later became a grand hotel before being acquired by entrepreneur José Manuel Rodrigues Berardo in 1987, opening to the public in 1991. Visitors typically access the garden via the Madeira Cable Car, which provides a scenic 15-minute ride from Funchal, or by local bus routes 20, 21, 22, or 48. Note that the cable car may undergo periodic maintenance closures.

Practical information for travelers includes admission fees of €18 for adults, with free entry for children under 14. The garden operates daily except December 25th, with hours varying by season. Amenities such as restaurants, cafes, and free Wi-Fi are available on-site. However, visitors should be aware that the terrain is steep and can be challenging for those with reduced mobility.
