Praia De Moledo (Moledo Beach)
Atlantic coast beach in Moledo, Portugal
Moledo is a small seaside parish in the municipality of Caminha, in the far north-west corner of Portugal, and its beach is one of the quieter stretches of the Minho coast. The long sandy shore faces the Atlantic, and just to the north the Minho river, which forms the border with Spain, reaches the sea. Across the water the green slopes of Galicia are visible, and on clear days the hill of Santa Tecla, above the Spanish town of A Guarda, can be seen on the far bank.
The beach is wide and open, backed in places by dunes and by pine woods that give the area a different feel from the Algarve resorts. The Atlantic here is cooler and livelier than in the south. Waves can be strong, currents are noticeable close to the river mouth, and the wind often blows from the north, which makes the area popular with kite surfers and walkers rather than casual paddlers. Swimmers should look for the flags and the presence of lifeguards in season, and take care near the estuary, where the water moves fast.
The setting is a large part of the appeal. The estuary is a place of changing light, with tidal flats, birds feeding at low tide, and fishing boats working the river. Out in the water lies the islet of Ínsua, with a small fort built in the 17th century to guard the mouth of the Minho, a reminder that this was long a sensitive frontier. The fort is visible from the shore, and boat trips sometimes visit it in summer. Behind the beach, the pine woods of Camarido have shaded paths and picnic areas that are pleasant on hot days.
Caminha, a short drive away, is a handsome walled town with a main square, a Renaissance parish church, and a ferry that crosses the river to A Guarda in Spain. A coastal cycle and walking route follows the shore, and local restaurants serve grilled fish, rice dishes, and vinho verde.
The beach suits walkers, birdwatchers, wind sports enthusiasts, and those who prefer open space to organised resorts. Bring a windbreaker and warm clothing even in summer, since the northern coast can be breezy and the evenings cool. Parking is generally available nearby, though it fills on summer weekends.
