Alfândega Régia – Museu De Construção Naval
16th-century ship replica in historic building
Vila do Conde has built ships for as long as it has had a river to launch them from, and the Museu de Construção Naval, housed in the old Alfândega Régia, makes sense of that tradition. The building beside the Ave was the royal customs house, where goods arriving by sea and river were assessed, and its function as a place of trade gives the museum a natural subject. The visit begins with the structure itself, a plain, solid stone building of the kind that reflected the practical business of the state.
The museum is arranged in three exhibition spaces, which together take the visitor through the story of the town's maritime life. The first part concerns the age of discovery and the role of Portuguese ships and sailors, setting out the routes that linked Europe to Africa, Asia, and Brazil. The second looks at how shipbuilding worked: the choice of timber, the shapes of hulls, the tools used by shipwrights, and the knowledge passed from master to apprentice. The third concentrates on the building itself and its function in the trade and taxation of the port. Models and drawings make the construction methods clear to those who are not specialists.
The feature that most visitors remember is outside. Opposite the museum, on the river, a full-size replica of a 16th-century nau is moored, built using techniques and materials that follow the period. Standing next to it gives a sense of scale that no exhibit can match, and visitors can see how compact the living and working spaces were compared with the distances the ships covered. Seeing the replica together with the museum's models helps to explain why the town was important to Portugal's expansion.
Vila do Conde has other attractions that combine well with a visit. The town is known for its lace, made by hand with bobbins, and for the large Santa Clara convent with its long aqueduct. The river front, the old streets, and the beaches are all close. The museum is closed on some days, and opening hours can change, so check them before going.
It suits families with children who like boats, travellers interested in Portugal's maritime past, and anyone looking for a half-day visit that is easy to do on foot.
