Galapinhos
Secluded Arrabinha beach with crystal waters
Galapinhos is one of the most admired beaches in the Arrábida Natural Park, a small crescent of pale sand and shallow turquoise water squeezed between steep, wooded slopes and the sea. It lies on the southern flank of the Serra da Arrábida, in the municipality of Setúbal, a short distance along the coast from the fishing hamlet of Portinho da Arrábida. The beach has often been named among the most beautiful in Europe in popular online polls, which has increased its fame, but it remains a place that rewards an early start.
The setting is the real attraction. The Arrábida is a limestone ridge that drops directly into the Atlantic, covered with Mediterranean scrub and woodland, including holm oak, strawberry trees, rosemary and wild olives, a vegetation so rich and so unusual in Portugal that it is protected as a park. The cliffs shelter the cove from the wind, and the sea is calm and clear, with a bright colour that owes much to the pale sand beneath. The offshore waters belong to a marine park, which protects the seabed and its fish, and snorkelling here gives you a chance to see shoals of small fish among the rocks.
Reaching the beach takes some effort, which keeps the numbers down. There is no road to the sand itself. Visitors park at a distance and walk down by a path through the scrub, which takes anywhere from fifteen to forty-five minutes depending on where you leave the car and which route you take, and the return climb is steep. In peak summer, vehicle access along the coastal road is often restricted, and limited parking means that it makes sense to arrive early or to use any shuttle service that runs. Check the current rules with the park or the Setúbal tourist office before you set out. Wear proper shoes and bring water, as the paths are exposed.
Facilities are minimal. Do not count on cafes, showers or shade on the beach, though in some summers a seasonal service may operate, so bring what you need and take your rubbish with you. The calm water makes it suitable for children who can swim and for beginners, but there are no lifeguards in many periods, so use judgement.
The best months are late spring and early autumn, when the weather is warm and the crowds are thinner. In July and August, the beach can be crowded by midday. Nearby, the Convento da Arrábida, the viewpoint at Portinho and the beaches of Figueirinha and Creiro give other options for the same day. The beach suits walkers, swimmers and photographers who are willing to trade convenience for scenery.
