Praia Figueirinha
Sandy beach in Arrabinha natural park
Praia da Figueirinha is one of the favourite beaches on the Arrábida coast, the stretch of steep limestone hills and clear water that runs west of Setúbal. It sits on the south-facing side of the Serra da Arrábida, between Setúbal and Portinho da Arrábida, and the hills behind it are covered in dense, aromatic Mediterranean scrub that rises almost straight from the road. The contrast between pale sand, green slopes, and blue water is the beach's main attraction.
The water is typically calm and clear, partly because the ridge shelters the coast from the strong northerly winds that affect much of Portugal. The shallow slope of the bottom makes it suitable for children and for relaxed swimming, and the clarity is sometimes compared to that of more tropical places, although the Atlantic temperature is cooler than that suggests. The coast here lies within the Arrábida Natural Park, created in 1976, and the adjacent waters are part of a marine park, which means fishing and boating are regulated and the underwater life is better protected than in many places. Snorkellers often see small fish among the rocks at the edges.
The vegetation is of particular interest. Arrábida preserves one of the best remaining stands of Mediterranean forest in Portugal, with holm oak, strawberry tree, rosemary, and other plants more usual in southern Europe's drier regions. In spring the hills are scented and full of wildflowers. A short walk away, other beaches such as Galapinhos and Creiro offer a similar atmosphere with a different shape, and the viewpoints above give a wide view over the coast.
Access is mainly by road from Setúbal along the coastal route, and in summer there can be traffic control and limited parking, so arriving early in the day is wise. Public transport in the area is limited, particularly outside the main season. Bring water, sun protection, and food, and check local arrangements for facilities, as services on the beach vary through the year.
It suits families, swimmers, snorkellers, and anyone looking for a quieter alternative to the beaches around Lisbon, about an hour away. Spring and early autumn are especially pleasant, with fewer people and mild weather.
