Pousada De Viseu
18th-century hospital converted to hotel in Viseu
The Pousada de Viseu occupies a large 18th-century building in the old centre of the city, one that was once the Hospital de São Teotónio. For generations, the building cared for the sick of Viseu, and after the hospital moved to modern premises, it was left empty. It was reopened in 2009 as a hotel in the Pousadas network, which converts historic buildings into places to stay, and the transformation is a good example of how old structures can be given new uses without losing their character.
The idea of the pousada goes back to the 1940s, when the Portuguese state began creating inns in castles, convents, palaces and manor houses across the country, to encourage travel and to preserve heritage. Today, the network is run privately, but the principle remains: guests stay in a place with history, in rooms that preserve original features such as stone walls, vaulted ceilings and tall windows, alongside modern comforts. At Viseu, the hospital's long corridors and generous proportions have been adapted for the purpose, with contemporary design in the public spaces and bedrooms.
Facilities include a restaurant, which concentrates on regional cooking, a bar, a spa with a Turkish bath and massage rooms, and an outdoor swimming pool for the summer months. Viseu lies in the Dão wine region, and the local table is well worth exploring: roast veal, pork cooked in wine and garlic, hearty stews, sheep's cheese from the nearby Serra da Estrela, and conventual sweets, matched with the elegant red wines of the Dão. The restaurant is a convenient way to try them, though the city has many other places to eat within walking distance.
The location is a major advantage. The old centre of Viseu is compact and mostly pedestrian, and the main sights lie within a short walk. The cathedral, the Sé, and the Grão Vasco Museum, with its collection of 16th-century paintings by the Viseu school, are close by, as is the Porta do Soar, a medieval gate, and the lanes and squares of the historic quarter. A little further, Fontelo Park offers shady walks and a palace of the bishops. In the evening, the city's cafes and restaurants come alive, but the atmosphere remains calm.
Beyond Viseu, a car opens up the region. The wine estates of the Dão, the granite villages of the Beira, and the Serra da Estrela are all within an hour or two. The pousada can be booked directly or through the group, and rates vary widely with the season, so book early for festival periods. A stay here suits couples, wine lovers and anyone who likes to combine a comfortable bed with a sense of history.
