Quinta de la Rosa is a wine estate on the bank of the Douro at Pinhão, the small town at the centre of the Douro wine region, and it is one of the best-known quintas in the valley. The vineyards climb the steep schist slopes behind the river in typical terraces, and the winery buildings, terraces, and gardens sit just above the water, with the railway line to the Pinhão station nearby. The setting is, in many ways, the Douro in miniature.

The estate has its origins in the early 19th century, and it has been in family hands for generations. Today it is run by the Bergqvist family, who are of mixed Portuguese and Scandinavian origin, and the wines are made by Jorge Moreira, a well-regarded winemaker of the region. The quinta produces both Port and unfortified Douro wines, and its vines include the traditional varieties of the valley, such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Sousão, grown together in old mixed plots as well as in newer plantings. Olive oil is also made, as on many Douro estates.

A visit usually combines a walk through the vineyards and the winery with a tasting. Guides explain how the grapes are picked by hand on the steep terraces, how traditional stone treading tanks called lagares are used for some Port wines, and how the wines age in barrels and bottle. A tasting of different styles shows the range of Port, from young ruby to aged tawny, and the dry red and white wines made from the same grapes. Visits are usually in small groups and need to be booked in advance, and prices and times vary, so check before travelling.

The quinta also offers accommodation and meals, which means visitors can stay among the vines. Autumn is the most colourful season, with the harvest in September and the vineyards turning red and gold, while summer is hot and dry and spring is fresh and green. The Pinhão station, covered in tile panels of wine scenes, is a short walk away, and river cruises on traditional rabelo boats leave from the quay.

The estate suits wine lovers, couples, and anyone wanting to understand how Port is made. Do not drive after a tasting, and arrange transport in advance.
