Mineral-rich 42°C thermal pool in historic garden

The hot spring in Terra Nostra Park is the most famous bath in the Azores, and it owes its appeal to the combination of its colour, its heat, and its garden. The spring rises within the Furnas valley, on the island of São Miguel, in the grounds of a botanical park that dates back to the 18th century. The water that flows into the large pool is rich in dissolved iron, which oxidises in the air and gives the pool a distinctive orange-brown colour, like weak tea or rust. The water is hot, usually given as somewhere between thirty-five and forty-two degrees, and it holds the temperature through the year, so a soak is as pleasant in winter drizzle as in summer sun.

The pool's history begins with an American. In 1775 Thomas Hickling, the American consul on the island, built a summer house here and a garden, which became known as Yankee Hall. In the 19th century the estate passed to a Portuguese viscount, who rebuilt the house, enlarged the pool, and planted the park with trees and shrubs from many countries. Over time, the garden grew into a collection of thousands of species, including tree ferns, cycads, camellias, magnolias, and giant trees. Winding paths, ponds, and a small stream link the different areas, and a visitor can spend an hour or two walking before or after the bath.

Bathing takes place in a pool a few steps from tall trees, and the experience is memorable. The warm, soft, iron-rich water has a faint mineral smell and tastes of metal if you swallow it, and it is believed by many to benefit the skin and muscles. Because of the iron, the water stains light fabrics and silver jewellery, so bathers wear old swimwear and remove rings and watches. Changing rooms and showers are available, and it is wise to rinse thoroughly afterwards. The pool can be crowded in the middle of the day, particularly in summer, so early morning or late afternoon is more relaxed. Opening hours and admission arrangements vary, and bathing is included with the park ticket.

The spring is part of a valley of geothermal activity, with fumaroles, mineral springs, and the lake nearby, and the park is easily combined with those. The experience suits couples, families, and travellers seeking relaxation, and it is a highlight of São Miguel.
