Cerrado Das Freiras
Viewpoint overlooking Sete Cidades lakes
Cerrado das Freiras is one of the viewpoints around the rim of the Sete Cidades caldera on São Miguel, and its name, which means the nuns' enclosure, is a reminder that this corner of the island has a long history of settlement and religious life. The area takes its name from a walled field once associated with nuns, and the overlook looks down on the two crater lakes, Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, which are the island's best-known sight.
From the viewpoint, the caldera spreads out below in a wide bowl. The lakes lie side by side, one blue, one green, linked by a narrow channel crossed by a small bridge, and the village of Sete Cidades with its pale church sits on the shore. Steep slopes rise on all sides, covered in dense forest, pasture, and hydrangea hedges, and the sea can be glimpsed beyond the outer rim. The colours of the lakes depend on the light, the sky, and the algae in the water, and they change through the day, so a visit at different times gives a different picture.
The weather is a major factor in the experience. The caldera often fills with cloud, and visitors may find the view hidden for several minutes before it opens suddenly. A good strategy is to wait patiently, as clouds in the Azores move fast. Early morning and late afternoon give the best light for photography, and clear spells after rain are particularly beautiful. In summer the hydrangeas are in bloom, and the road around the crater is edged with blue and pink flowers.
The viewpoint lies along the road that circles the crater, close to other lookouts, and it is easy to combine with the better-known Vista do Rei and with a walk along the rim or down to the lake shore. There is parking nearby, and the stop takes only a few minutes, though many visitors stay longer. The site is open at all times and has no fee, but there are few facilities, so bring water and warm clothing.
The viewpoint suits drivers, cyclists, photographers, and anyone on a short visit to the west of the island. It is especially pleasant at the start of the day, before the tour buses arrive.
