Hiking In Sete Cidades Crater

Hiking trail through volcanic crater lakes

The Sete Cidades caldera, at the western end of São Miguel, is the best-known hiking area on the island, and the walk along the crater rim is one of the classic outings in the Azores. The caldera is about five kilometres across, with steep inner walls, a flat floor, and the twin lakes, Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, which fill much of the basin. The trail follows the rim for much of the way, giving constant views of the lakes, the village below, and the ocean on the outer side.

The circuit is around twelve to thirteen kilometres, and takes four to five hours at a steady pace, though it is easy to do shorter sections. The path is generally clear, with moderate climbs, and it passes through woodland, open pasture, and stretches of hydrangea, with a number of viewpoints along the way. A favourite starting point is the Vista do Rei, from where the hike heads along the ridge past other lookouts, including the viewpoint at Boca do Inferno, which looks onto the neighbouring crater lakes of Santiago and Canário. On the descent, walkers can go down to the lake shore and the village of Sete Cidades, which has a neo-Gothic church and a few cafés.

Weather decides the quality of the walk. The caldera is often filled with cloud, mist can fall within minutes, and wind on the rim can be strong, so bring waterproof layers and a warm jacket. On clear days the views are superb, with the contrast between the lakes, the green slopes, and the blue of the ocean. Sturdy shoes are recommended, as paths can be muddy and slippery, and walkers should carry water and snacks, because there are few services on the rim.

Other activities add variety. Kayaks can be hired on Lagoa Azul in good weather, and the road around the lake is lined with hydrangeas, which flower from June to September. Cyclists use the same roads, and a short drive from the crater leads to the black volcanic coast at Mosteiros, where natural swimming pools offer a different kind of outing. The village has a few places to eat.

The hike suits regular walkers and fit visitors who enjoy long views. Allow a full day with stops, starting early to take advantage of clear mornings.
