Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Conceição

The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Conceição is a small chapel in Alcoutim, a quiet town on the west bank of the Guadiana in the far east of the Algarve. Ermida means hermitage, the name given in Portugal to a small church or chapel, often on a hill or at the edge of a settlement, which was built and maintained by a local brotherhood or a devout family rather than as a parish church. Such chapels are found throughout the country, and they preserve a great deal of local history in a very small space.

The chapel is dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, a devotion that was widely popular in Portugal, particularly after the 17th century, when the kingdom was placed under her protection. The building is modest, with a plain white exterior, a simple door, and a small bell, and it stands outside the main centre of the old town, close to a former gate. The date of the original foundation is unclear, but the church was rebuilt in the 16th century, and in the 18th century a Baroque staircase was added to give access to the entrance, a typical embellishment of that period.

The interior holds the main attractions. The high altar is faced with tile panels from the 16th century in a Moorish style, with geometric patterns in green, blue, and ochre, derived from the Hispano-Moorish tradition that was common in southern Iberia. These early tiles are among the oldest still in place in the region, and they show how Islamic craftsmanship continued to influence Portuguese art after the reconquest. In contrast, the gilded altarpiece in carved wood, in Baroque style, dates from a later period and adds warm colour and ornate detail. The combination of the plain walls and the decorated altar is typical of rural chapels, where limited resources were concentrated on the sanctuary.

Because the chapel is small and often closed, it is worth asking in town whether it is open, as access depends on the parish and on local arrangements. The exterior and the setting are pleasant in any case. Alcoutim has other sights close by, including the medieval castle, the parish church, the main square, and the riverside, and the Via Algarviana walking route ends in the town.

The chapel suits visitors interested in local history, tilework, and quiet, unspoilt places. A visit takes only a few minutes, and fits easily into a walk around the town.
