Parque de Merendas

A parque de merendas is one of the simplest and most useful features of the Portuguese countryside: a picnic area, usually with tables, shade, and a quiet setting, where families and walkers can stop for a meal. The word merenda means a light meal or snack, and the habit of eating outdoors, especially on weekends and holidays, is deeply rooted. The picnic park at Alcoutim belongs to that tradition, and it is a pleasant place to rest in a landscape that is far less visited than the Algarve coast.

Alcoutim lies on the west bank of the Guadiana, the river that forms the border with Spain in the east of the Algarve. The town faces the Spanish village of Sanlúcar de Guadiana across the water, and the surroundings are rural and sparsely populated. Low hills covered in cork oak, scrub, and cistus rise behind the river, and the quiet is one of the main attractions. The area has some of the lowest population density in the Algarve and some of the darkest night skies, and in spring the hills are covered in wildflowers.

For walkers, the setting is useful. The Via Algarviana, a long-distance trail that crosses the Algarve from west to east, ends at Alcoutim, and local routes lead through the hills and along the ribeira that runs into the Guadiana. A picnic stop is a natural way to break a hike. Cyclists and drivers exploring the interior also use such areas as a base for a snack and a rest. The site is open to the public without an entrance fee, and, as in all such places, visitors are expected to take their rubbish with them and avoid lighting fires.

The village of Alcoutim itself has several things worth seeing. A medieval castle overlooks the river, there is a main square with cafés, and the parish church and a small museum add to the walk. The riverside is pleasant in the evening, when the light turns warm over the water. Summer can be very hot, so spring and autumn are the best times for walking, while water and sun protection are needed at any time of year.

The picnic area suits families, hikers, and anyone who prefers a slow, quiet day in the Algarve interior, with a simple meal prepared from local bread, cheese, and fruit.
