Igreja De Santa Maria

The Igreja de Santa Maria is the parish church of Óbidos, facing the main square near the foot of Rua Direita, and it has been central to the life of the walled town for centuries. A church has stood here since the period after the Christian reconquest of the 12th century, and the building seen today owes much to rebuilding in the 16th century, when Queen Leonor, wife of João II, supported work in the town. The exterior is plain and white, with a porch in Renaissance and Mannerist style, and the simplicity prepares you for an interior that is far richer.

Inside, the nave is covered in blue and yellow tiles from the 17th century that reach high up the walls, giving a bright, patterned effect. Above them, the wooden ceiling is painted with scenes by the artist José de Ávila, dated 1676. Near the main altar is the tomb of João de Noronha, governor of Óbidos castle, an important piece of Portuguese Renaissance sculpture generally attributed to Nicolau Chanterene, with delicate carved ornament in pale stone. The church also has a Baroque altarpiece and organ.

Santa Maria is also linked to a royal occasion. In 1441, the young Afonso V married his cousin Isabel here, when both were still children, a marriage that tied together two branches of the royal family. The event helps explain why Óbidos was later given as a gift to Portuguese queens, a tradition that lasted for centuries and left the town with the nickname of the Town of the Queens.

Visiting is simple. The church is in the middle of the town, so it fits easily into a walk from the Porta da Vila, along Rua Direita, and up toward the castle. Visitors should dress modestly, speak quietly, and remember that it is a working church where services take place. A visit of fifteen to twenty minutes is enough to see the tiles, ceiling, and tomb properly.

The church suits lovers of art and architecture, history readers, and anyone who wants to step away from the busy shops for a few minutes. In summer the square can be crowded, so early morning or late afternoon gives a calmer experience.
