Igreja De Santa Maria

Igreja de Santa Maria, located in the main square of Óbidos, serves as the town’s primary religious and historical landmark. The church’s history is complex, originating from a Visigothic temple, later becoming a mosque, and finally being reconsecrated as a Christian church in the 12th century. The current structure, largely shaped by renovations in the 16th century, reflects a blend of architectural styles, including Mannerist elements. The exterior features a distinctive Mannerist portico, while the interior is adorned with blue and yellow tiles and a painted wooden ceiling.

A key feature of the church is the tomb of João de Noronha, a masterpiece of Portuguese Renaissance sculpture carved from stone. Located to the left of the main altar, this tomb is a significant artistic and historical artifact. The church also holds historical significance for royal events; it was the site of the wedding between the infant Afonso V and his cousin in 1441, a union that was later celebrated with a second ceremony in 1441.

Visitors can explore the interior, which includes a Baroque retable and a 17th-century pipe organ. The church is open daily, with hours typically running from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
