Igreja Matriz de Alcoutim

The parish church of Alcoutim stands in the lower part of the village, close to the river front and a short walk below the castle, and it is the most substantial religious building in this quiet corner of the eastern Algarve. It is a Renaissance church, built in the middle of the 16th century, and it stands on the site of an earlier medieval church, replacing it with a larger building as the town grew. The date places it in the period when Renaissance ideas, brought from Italy, were reaching even remote parts of Portugal and changing the shape of church architecture.

From the outside the church is plain. Its walls are whitewashed, the roofs are of red tile, and a small bell tower rises at one side, in the manner of rural churches throughout southern Portugal. A carved stone portal in the Renaissance style is the main decorative feature of the facade, and it frames the entrance with classical columns and an arch. The simplicity of the exterior is typical of the area, where resources were limited and the focus was on the interior.

Inside, the layout has three naves separated by rows of slender columns whose capitals are carved with simple decoration, a plan that gives a sense of lightness and space. The architecture is calm and well proportioned, with clean lines and arched openings. The main chapel and the side chapels contain carved and gilded altarpieces, known as retables, in the Baroque style of later centuries, which add warmth and colour to the pale walls. Their carving is not as lavish as in the great churches of the cities, but it shows the craftsmanship of local artisans and the devotion of the community. A few sacred images and paintings complete the furnishings.

The church is a quiet place, and visitors should treat it with respect. It is still the parish church, and it is open at times arranged locally, so it may be closed outside services. If the door is open, a visit of ten or fifteen minutes is enough to enjoy the architecture. The square outside is a pleasant spot, with the river a short walk away.

Alcoutim has a few other sights close together, including the castle, the square, the small chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, and the riverside promenade. Together they can be seen in a morning. The church suits visitors interested in architecture and local history, as well as travellers who enjoy small, uncrowded places.
