The Porta Férrea, the Iron Gate, is the formal entrance to the old university of Coimbra, and passing through it is the traditional way to arrive at the Pátio das Escolas. It is a stone gateway in the Mannerist style, built in the 1630s to the design of the Coimbra architect António Tavares, and it replaced an earlier entrance that had been part of the town's medieval walls. The name comes from the iron gates that once closed it, a reminder that the university was an enclosed world with its own rules and discipline, separate from the city around.

The design is bold and symmetrical. A central archway is framed by columns and a strong cornice, and above it stand statues and an inscription. The figures include King Dinis, who founded the university, and João III, who brought it to Coimbra, as well as allegorical figures representing virtues of learning and justice. Two small towers rise at the sides, from which guards once watched the entrance. The whole structure has a solid, confident look, and its rich stonework contrasts with the plain surfaces around it.

The approach is part of the experience. The gate sits at the top of a steep climb up the lanes and steps from the old town, a climb that students and visitors have made for centuries. Passing under the archway, you emerge into the large, open courtyard of the Pátio, with the Baroque tower, the old royal palace buildings, and the library on its sides, and the sudden light and space are a pleasant contrast to the narrow lanes below. The view from the edge of the courtyard looks out over the roofs of Coimbra and the river.

The gate is also a place where student traditions are visible. Graduates in black academic capes pass through, and ceremonies and rituals take place in the courtyard beyond. The gate has long been a symbol of entry into academic life, and at certain times of the year it is surrounded by students celebrating.

The gate itself can be seen at any time, and the courtyard it opens onto is accessible on university opening hours, which are generally in the daytime. Arrive early to avoid the crowds in high season. It suits history readers, architecture lovers, and photographers, and is an obvious first stop on a tour of the university. The climb is steep, so wear comfortable shoes.
