The Igreja Matriz of Sortelha is the parish church of one of the best-preserved fortified villages in the Beira Interior. It is dedicated to Nossa Senhora das Neves, Our Lady of the Snows, a title that suits a settlement perched on a granite outcrop at around 760 metres, where winter weather can be cold and sharp. The church sits inside the walls, among the granite houses, and like almost everything in Sortelha it is built from the grey stone of the hill itself.

Sortelha lies in the municipality of Sabugal, in the district of Guarda, close to the old frontier with Spain. The village received a charter in the early 13th century, and after the border treaty of the late 13th century King Dinis strengthened the walls and castle. Inside the circuit the lanes still follow the shape of a medieval settlement, and the church has been the spiritual centre of that community throughout. The present building has changed over time, as parish churches usually do, with later additions layered on earlier work.

Visitors will find an unfussy church that rewards a quiet look. The granite exterior blends with the village so completely that it is easy to walk past, and the interior is calm and modest compared with city churches. The pleasure is less in the individual furnishings than in the setting: heavy stone, small windows, and the sense of a village that has gathered here for centuries. It is a good place to pause and understand how daily life in a fortress village worked, with the church alongside the houses and a short walk from the castle gate.

The church fits easily into a visit to the other sights inside the walls. The castle and the walkway along the ramparts give the views, the chapels and the stepped Via Sacra show the village's religious landscape, and the Matriz completes the picture. A circuit of the village takes an hour or two if you stop often.

Sortelha suits history lovers, photographers, and travellers who like small, quiet places. Visit early or late in the day to avoid the busiest hours, and wear shoes with good grip, since the paving is uneven granite and can be slippery. Whether the church is open depends on the day and on local arrangements, so treat the exterior as the main sight and any interior visit as a bonus.
