Praça da República

Praça da República is the central square of Alcoutim, a small town on the west bank of the Guadiana in the far east of the Algarve, and it is the natural place to begin a visit. The town is quiet, set among low hills that fall to the river, and the square reflects that character: it is modest in size, calm, and used mainly by residents for everyday business. A few trees give shade, benches face the open space, and the surrounding buildings are whitewashed, with doors and window frames picked out in colour.

The buildings around it include the town hall and other municipal offices, a few cafés and shops, and local services such as banks and a pharmacy, which makes the square practical as well as pleasant. Visitors who need to take out cash or buy supplies will find them within a few steps. The parish church is a short walk away, and the castle rises on the hill above, so the square forms the hub of a small group of sights that can be explored on foot in half a day. The river front is also close, and a walk down to the water leads to a promenade with views across to the Spanish village of Sanlúcar de Guadiana.

The square has an easy, slow rhythm. In the morning, residents gather at café tables for a coffee and a pastry, and in the afternoon the heat of summer sends people into the shade. In the evenings, the temperature drops, and the square is a pleasant place to sit. Events such as markets and festivals are held in the town in certain seasons, and the square may host stalls or music at those times. Alcoutim is known for its crafts, including basketry and weaving, and for local honey, cheese, and sausages, which can sometimes be found in shops nearby.

Because Alcoutim lies far from the main tourist routes, it has retained a strong sense of community, and visitors are often struck by the friendliness of the locals. The surrounding country, with cork oak woods, hills, and the long-distance walking route known as the Via Algarviana, adds opportunities for walks and rides. Services in the area are limited, so plan meals and fuel.

The square is open at all hours and free to visit. It suits travellers who enjoy small places, slow travel, and the atmosphere of a quiet border town. Use it as a base for a walk around the old centre, the castle, and the river.
