Quinta do Seixo

Quinta do Seixo is the Douro estate of Sandeman, one of the best-known names in Port wine, and it is set up to give visitors a clear introduction to how Port is made and what its main styles taste like. The estate lies in the municipality of Tabuaço, on the south bank of the river, among steep terraced slopes of schist, in a section of the valley that forms part of the UNESCO-listed wine region. The house looks across the river toward the hills opposite, and the scale of the landscape is a good prelude to the tasting.

The Sandeman company was founded in London in 1790 by a Scotsman, George Sandeman, and it is known for the figure of the Don, a caped silhouette in a broad-brimmed hat, which was used in advertising from the 1920s and has become one of the best-known logos in the wine world. The cellars of the firm are in Vila Nova de Gaia, opposite Porto, where Port has traditionally been aged, but the grapes are grown and picked in the Douro, and a visit to the quinta shows the vineyard side of the story.

The standard visit lasts around fifty minutes and includes a tasting of three styles of Port, white, ruby, and tawny. These show the range of the drink. White Port is made from white grapes and is served chilled, often with tonic water, as a refreshing aperitif. Ruby Port is a young, fruity red, aged briefly and kept for its strong colour and berry flavours. Tawny is aged for longer in wooden casks, which gives it an amber colour and flavours of nuts, dried fruit, and caramel. Tasting them side by side is a useful lesson in how time and oak shape the same basic wine.

Longer options exist for those who want more. A vineyard visit takes in the old vines on the estate, some more than a century old, where the guide explains the terraces, the soil, and the manual work of the harvest, and picnics or cheese pairings with wine can be added. Guests of different ages are welcome, and the staff accommodate small children and visitors with mobility needs where possible, but bookings are advised.

The seasonal opening times vary, with shorter hours in winter. A visit suits wine lovers, couples, and families who want a calm, scenic stop on a Douro trip. If you plan to drive, taste in moderation and allow time for the winding roads.
