Thermal Springs in Chaves
Millennial Roman thermal springs in Chaves, Portugal
Chaves is a town in the north of Portugal, in the valley of the Tâmega river, close to the Spanish border, and it has been famous for its hot springs for two thousand years. The Romans knew it as Aquae Flaviae, the waters of the Flavians, after the emperors Vespasian and his sons, and the name Chaves comes from it by way of the Latin. The springs here are among the hottest in the country, with water emerging at close to seventy degrees Celsius, which made them valuable and a reason for the Romans to build a town and a fine stone bridge, still standing, across the river.
The waters are rich in minerals, including sodium, bicarbonate, and carbon dioxide, and they have traditionally been used for the treatment of rheumatic conditions, digestive problems, and skin ailments. Roman baths once stood at the site, and some remains of them can be seen in the centre of the town. The tradition of using the waters for health has continued without interruption, and a modern spa now offers treatments including thermal baths, massage, hydrotherapy, and drinking cures. Many visitors come for wellness stays, and the spa has a quiet, professional atmosphere. A public fountain in the town has hot water that people use for drinking, and visitors may see locals filling bottles.
The thermal season runs for most of the year, from early February to the end of December, with the busiest period in summer and early autumn, and opening times and treatments vary, so it is best to confirm details in advance. The spa is open to people of all ages, and some treatments require a medical consultation. Prices for baths and packages vary and should be checked directly.
Chaves is about an hour and a half from Porto by car, and it combines the pleasure of a spa visit with other sights. The Roman bridge, the medieval castle with its keep and military museum, the old centre with its balconied houses, and the gardens along the river all lie within a short walk. The region is known for its smoked ham and sausages, and the pastry shops sell the town's flaky meat pastries. The surrounding hills offer pleasant drives and walks, and the countryside around is green and quiet.
The springs suit people seeking relaxation, couples, and anyone interested in the Roman history of the north.
